Healthy Favorites at El Pollo Loco

El Pollo Loco's Taco al Carbon contains just 153 calories and 476 mg. sodium.

Since we went to town to run errands yesterday, we had to catch lunch on the run. No worries though with the Lifestyle Plan, as we stopped at El Pollo Loco, which has several great healthier options on their menu. Charles and I usually have a Taco al Carbon, a very tasty street taco with 153 calories and 476 mg. sodium, but today we decided to expand our horizons and try a few other menu items.

El Pollo Loco's Grilled Chicken Salad is very filing, yet low in calories and sodium.

Although it’s not new to the menu, I’ve never had the Grilled Chicken Salad, so I decided to give it a try. I wasn’t disappointed as it was very filling with lettuce, chunks of grilled chicken breast, pico de gallo, tortilla strips, corn pablano mix and cilantro, topped with some cotja cheese. I ordered it without the lime cilantro dressing, and topped it with a few tablespoons of the house salsa from the salsa bar. In the end I ended up with a very satisfying meal with only 232 calories and 517 mg. sodium. And I washed it all down with my favorite Minute Maid Lite Lemonade!

El Pollo Loco's Baja Fish Taco is only around for a limited time, so give it a try before it goes away.

Charles went another route and ordered his usual Taco al Carbon, but paired it with the relatively new Baja Fish Taco. This temporary menu item features beer battered fish, baja sauce, cabbage and cilantro wrapped in a warm corn tortilla. Nutrition-wise it logs in at an acceptable 209 calories and 259 mg. sodium. And although Charles prefers his fish tacos grilled, he still gave it the thumbs up. Unfortunately the Baja Fish Taco is only available for a limited time, so try one soon or you may miss out altogether.

El Pollo Loco never disappoints us, and I’m glad they’ve added healthier items to their menu over the years.
