Go Naked at Subway for a Healthy Lunch

Subway has become a staple lunch stop for us on road trips, because they have a nice core selection of healthy sandwiches that have between 250 and 300 calories, and are somewhat reasonable in the sodium content. This however, is our first road trip since we have given up wheat, so I was a little bit leery about our lunch stops. I’m happy to report that my worry was for naught, as Subway still dishes up a very healthy wheat-free lunch for us.

All we have to do is go naked.

That’s right folks – we order a naked sandwich, which means ditching the bread. And a sandwich without the bread is basically a salad, which is exactly what we do at Subway. You can have any sandwich made as a salad, but I stick to the healthy selections.

For example, yesterday I had a turkey salad, with a piece of pepper jack cheese, and about 2 t of the low-fat honey mustard dressing, which weighed in at a very healthy 180 calories. And it was very filling. I order my dressing on the side, because they tend to be a little heavy handed about it, and it gives me more control about what exactly goes on my salad.

So next time you want to cut the calories and eat healthy – go naked at Subway. I also have to add, that I order my sandwiches without the bread in just about every restaurant I go to, and I’ve never had any problems getting it served that way. In this day and age, I expect servers are used to the request.

Be healthy – go naked!!
