This easy recipe for apple turnovers is low in calories and sodium, but still very tasty. I use my home made apple pie filling, but the canned stuff works just as well.
And don’t get frustrated if the phyllo dough gets hard to work with. The key is keeping it moist, but if you have problems, there’s usually enough in a package to sacrifice a sheet or two. I usually only make 6-8 turnovers at a time, because after that, things get a little messy with the dough!
Ingredients
6 sheets phyllo dough
9 T apple pie filling
non-stick cooking spray
granulated sugar
Directions
Thaw phyllo dough in refrigerator overnight. When ready to use, unroll dough, remove one sheet and place on work surface. Put a piece of plastic wrap and a dampened towel over the remaining dough to prevent it from drying out. If the dough becomes too dry it will be difficult to work with, so try and work as quickly as possible.
Spray one sheet of phyllo dough with non-stick cooking spray. Fold in half vertically, and spray again. Fold in half again to form a long strip, and place 1½ T apple pie filling at the bottom of the strip. Fold over to form a triangle, encasing the filling. Continue to fold the triangle over and over, as you would fold a flag. Spray folded turnover with non-stick cooking spray and place on cooking sheet coated with non-stick cooking spray.
Repeat with remaining sheets of phyllo dough.
Bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes, checking at 10 minutes. Turnovers are done when golden brown and flaky.
Remove turnovers from cookie sheet and cool. Sprinkle with granulated sugar.
